Lighting designers tag along at all the major awards shows—Oscars, Emmys, Tonys, Golden Globes—which means you could certainly achieve some degree of fame for doing what you do. If you're a lighting designer for a hit Broadway musical that starts winning a whole slew of technical awards, you might even (drum roll)...end up on television. We know. It was your biggest dream, like, ever.
If you ever want to see an actor silently fume with agonizing jealousy, just show him the Tony you won for lighting design. If he's a good actor, you'll see all sorts of waves of emotion hit him, from heartfelt praise to blinding jealousy to shaking internal rage at not having also won a Tony. It's a remarkable phenomenon. Just make sure you wipe the drool off the trophy before placing it back on the mantel.
