Glory

Think of the excitement of analyzing data from the Doppler radar and warning a small town of an impending tornado. Meteorologists can save a town by issuing warnings shortly before a large scale disaster.

However, this experience doesn't happen every day. Generally, meteorologists record data and analyze weather programs. Besides, you can't really sit around hoping for a disaster. It may make you feel validated in your work to save some lives, but wishing a tornado on your town for your own personal glory is just plain creepy.

Being an environmental meteorologist can be an extremely fulfilling job. Environmental meteorologists study climate change, ozone depletion, air contaminates, greenhouse emissions, and droughts. They use their findings to draft reports that are used by other scientists to problem solve.

In terms of looking for a "green" job, you can't do much better than being part of a growing field of meteorologists striving to solve the world's environmental problems. You'll have to trade in your gas-guzzler, though. You don't want to kick off your environmental meteorology career steeped in hypocrisy.
