20-Year Prospect
The internet has changed a whole mess of things, not the least of which is the way we get our news. We've seen reductions in cable subscriptions, cult-like YouTube followings, and news content that probably has famous reporters from the past rolling around in their graves.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a 14% drop in reporters and correspondents by 2020, which is about 25% less than average job growth (source). Ouch.
But while traditional roles may diminish, new roles will inevitably rise for whatever method people use to get their news two decades down the road. Will you be a part of it? Maybe. If you're good at what you do, have a great personality (or hairdo, or both), and have a big following, you'll probably find a way to make it work for you if you're paying attention. So pay attention.
