Odds of Getting In
Good teachers will always be in demand. So be a good teacher. However, be prepared to have a harder time securing employment as a history, sociology, or philosophy professor than you would as a nursing, education, or business professor. Knowledge that can be more directly and tangibly applied will always be more valued, and subsequently more greatly rewarded by colleges and universities, not to mention the real world. Pay is higher, and demand is greater.
That doesn't mean that the content of your course is any less important in the grand scheme of things, it's just that you can't suture the wound of a dying man with a philosophy degree. All you can really do is make him feel better by attempting to convince him he doesn't exist in the first place.
