You probably thought it was going to be all fashion models and war zones. You know, depending on what you wanted to take pictures of. As it turns out, there's a lot a lot of heartbreak and not nearly enough happiness to go around.

The problem is that everyone fancies themselves a photographer. Taking a decent picture is easier than ever before because the cameras in our phones are training us…bending us to their will for the eventual phonerising. Assuming you're under fifty. If you're over fifty, you're fortunately immune to technology. How are you even reading this?

With a huge supply of photographers, demand and prices go down. This is bad news for you. The salary tends to be a bit lower than other college graduates, and that's assuming you aren't one of the even percent that is unemployed. It's hard work making a living as a photographer. You may have all the talent in the world, but the truth is, so do a lot of other people. They all want the same job as you. What a coincidence. You should hang out.

Those who went into the major for an easy life, thinking they were going to rocket to the top of the heap, are not going to be happy. If you love photography, and your greatest joy is taking pictures, and you love eating instant noodles, this could be a good fit for you. Just manage your expectations. No one gets assigned puppies on their first day.
