Quote 4
I don't want Peeta singling himself out as a target for the Gamemakers' anger. That's part of my job. To draw fire away from Peeta. But how did he upset them? Because I'd love to do just that and more. To break through the smug veneer of those who use their brains to find amusing ways to kill us. To make them realize that while we're vulnerable to the Capitol's cruelties, they are as well. (16.100)
As soon as you become associated with the Games, you have to learn about manipulation. It's a necessity. Katniss has come a long way since she first got tapped to play in the Hunger Games. Now she knows she's being manipulated, and how. She's trying to manipulate people right back so that she and Peeta can stay alive.
Quote 5
I look up into those blue eyes that no amount of dramatic makeup can make truly deadly and remember how, just a year ago, I was prepared to kill him. Convinced he was trying to kill me. Now everything is reversed. I'm determined to keep him alive, knowing the cost will be my own life, but the part of me that is not so brave as I could wish is glad that it's Peeta, not Haymitch, beside me. (16.53)
Katniss can't be full of courage all the time. Occasionally she breaks down and feels like she's "not so brave." In this moment she needs Peeta beside her. Even though he's been one of her worst enemies, he's also become one of her best friends. He's one of the few people who can understand what's happened to her, and they have a bond that goes far beyond ordinary friendship or dating. They are constantly in danger, and they constantly turn to one another for comfort and protection.
Quote 6
"You're going to need more allies this time around. [...] Because you can fight. You're popular with the crowd. That could still make you desirable allies. But only if you let the others know you're willing to team up with them," says Haymitch. (16.21, 25)
The Games are all about strategy. They haven't even started yet and Katniss and Peeta already need to choose their sides. They constantly have to be thinking about how to protect themselves; they never get a moment's rest. Deciding between friend and enemy could make the difference between life and death.
