The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
The last and most consequential of the Progressive Era amendments to the Constitution, the Nineteenth Amendment granted women the right to vote. Nearly 150 years after Thomas Jefferson wrote that "all men are created equal," American women also gained the right to equal citizenship.
