How we cite our quotes: (chapter.paragraph)
Quote #7
[Edward] balanced the little figurine in his snowy palm. For a fleeting moment, I was afraid. Just the slightest twist of his fingers could crush it into splinters. But of course, Edward wouldn't do that. (19.23)
For a moment there it seems Bella admits to herself and to us that she knows Edward is jealous of Jacob and that he's capable of hurting him. But then she vehemently rejects that thought. Do you think she's trying to protect a false image of Edward?
Quote #8
[Jacob to Edward:] "The jealousy… it has to be eating at you. You can't be as sure of yourself as you seem. Unless you have no emotions at all." (22.102)
Jacob seems to imply that jealousy is a natural human emotion. Is that true and, if so, should you suppress your jealousy or is it natural to act on it?
Quote #9
[Jacob to Edward:] "What if she wants me to [kiss her]?" "If that's what she wants, then I won't object." Edward shrugged, untroubled. (22.178)
So the opposite of jealousy seems to be selflessness. But could Edward's selflessness also be construed as calculated selfishness? Does pure selflessness exist?
