Hazel Grace

Hazel Grace doesn't fit into the typical mold of a strong female protagonist à la Joan of Arc. She is constantly lugging around her medical supplies, she's always short of breath, and she has her hair cropped short (due to her pesky cancer). But despite her bodily ailments, Hazel has a resolve of steel. She drives the story and stays strong emotionally even while she's staring down her own mortality, and seems to handle it better than her own parents and friends. When things go south for her boyfriend Augustus, Hazel remains unwavering and there for him; and she survives his loss with, well, utter grace.
