Character Role Analysis
The Tutor
As we discuss in Orestes's "Character Analysis," the Tutor is a pretty bad mentor from an existentialist's perspective. He believes that freedom lies in a lack of commitment and obligation. True, freedom is the ability to choose, but to be fully human we have to exercise that freedom by actually choosing something. In this way, the Tutor is sort of a false mentor for the young hero of The Flies.
