Character Analysis
Adam very briefly meets a policeman when he asks to stash his bike at the police station while he gets something to eat. The weird thing about this guy is that he doesn't look up at Adam when he responds. "I could have had two heads or been carrying a rifle or anything and he wouldn't have cared" (14.5). In hindsight, we can assume this is a hospital worker who is used to Adam asking the same questions every day and isn't willing to put on a show for him. It reveals to us that, despite the fact that Adam is probably imagining this whole journey, he's still aware of his surroundings and the way people are reacting to him.
