Tutok

Karana and Tutok come from different worlds: Karana is a native islander and Tutok travels with the Aleutian hunters. But they do have some similarities. For starters, both girls cared for the dog Rontu at some point. They also both love pretty necklaces and cormorant skirts. (Don't we all?) Most importantly, though, Karana and Tutok share the same basic values. Neither are violent, both appreciate friendship, and both girls are capable of open communication and trust. (Karana even tells Tutok her secret name! Wowza.) They might appear to be from two very different places, but the girls are able to form a true connection that suggests that the two cultures they come from can exist together. Their friendship is the opposite of the relationship between Chief Chowig and Captain Orlov.
