Ramo

Karana's little brother, Ramo, is the one who gets left behind when the white men come to the island to evacuate the natives. While his sister sacrifices herself to stay with him (she throws herself off the side of the boat, for Pete's sake), Ramo himself becomes a sacrifice. A pack of wild dogs kills him, leaving Karana all alone. As next in line to become Chief, Ramo had declared himself the ruler of the island. When he gets killed, this last piece of the older ruling order is stamped out. Ramo's death means that the older, destructive government is completely gone.
