Interestingly, the all-powerful and benevolent Lion, described as the King of the Wood, acts more as a guide and mentor to the Pevensie children than as the heroic focus of the story. Aslan likes to work behind the scenes when he can, letting people exercise their own free will and do their own jobs without too much interference from him. When he's needed, however, he always steps up to the plate.
