Guide/Mentor: Dr. Montague

Dr. Montague is the guide character for sure. Before we even meet him properly in the story, his written instructions guide Eleanor to Hill House. He mentors Eleanor, Theodora, and Luke on the haunted history of the place. He guides his childlike trio of assistants through the various paranormal—or psychological—manifestations at the house.

Unfortunately, his mentoring doesn't prove too hot when he advises Eleanor to leave Hill House. In the end, it's debatable whether or not his mentoring helped or ultimately destroyed Eleanor, but, hey, here's to giving it the old college try.
