Neo

This is about as simple as it gets. Neo is the hero of the story, both in a literal he-saves the-day-by-rescuing-Morpheus-and-defeating-an-agent sense, and because he is the central character who undergoes the hero's journey. It's through Neo's eyes (or throat?) that we enter the real world for the first time. He is the center of the story. He is The One.
