- Merry and Pippin are being escorted to Isengard by orcs and uruk-hai. Merry doesn't look like he's doing so well.
- They pick up the scent of "man-flesh" and pick up their pace. Pippin drops his elven broach as a sign to their pursuers.
- And sure enough, not far behind are Gimli, Legolas, and Aragorn.
- They find the broach and know that they are gaining on the hobbits.
- As they pause and survey their surrounds, they can see the kingdom of Rohan, the horse lords, and realize that Merry and Pippin are being taken to Saruman.
