Bring on the tough stuff. There’s not just one right answer.
- Maverick famously tells Iceman that he's dangerous. Then again, Maverick also ultimately saves the day (and Iceman's life). Does it pay to be dangerous? Or does Maverick just get lucky?
- Does Goose really have to die? What's the point of his death anyway? Does Maverick learn any important lessons as a result? Would the film have been better, cooler, or more interesting if there was more "dogfighting" with MiG-28's?
- Sometimes Maverick can get a little moody and cranky (recall the scene where he flips out on Charlie after she supposedly makes him look dumb during their lesson). Do you ever feel like he needs to grow up a little bit and stop making a fuss over the little things? Does he grow up over the course of the movie?
- What do you think of the choice to have Kelly McGillis star opposite Tom Cruise? Was she the right actress for the job?
- Would you trust Maverick to be your wingman? Or would you rather have Iceman watching your back?
- Is it fair that Maverick didn't win the Top Gun trophy? Did he deserve it more than Iceman, even if he didn't have enough points?
- What is Cougar doing in this movie? Why did the writers feel it necessary to have some other dude quit so that Maverick could slide into Cougar's spot?
- What do you make of the movie's style choices, especially in the action sequences? Did you find the dogfights hard to follow at any point?
