Antagonist
Character Role Analysis
Eeyore (Sometimes)
Poor Eeyore, he tries to bring everybody down, but his efforts to bother the others just never really work. We kind of have to wonder: if no one actually listens, does it count as antagonism? What does Eeyore say about the Expotition? "'It's simply a Confused Noise. That's what I say.'" (Winnie-the-Pooh.8.46). How do Christopher Robin, Pooh and Piglet respond? "'Come on!'" they call (Winnie-the-Pooh.8.50-52), and they go off on the adventure anyway.
So Eeyore can be sarcastic, overreactive, negative, cynical, grumpy, caustic, challenging, dreadful, grey...well, you get the point. We all know an Eeyore or two. What makes this Eeyore okay, and what makes us still kinda love him, is that his antagonism fails to ever bring the characters down. He's so extreme that he demands our sympathy, and, yes, a little bit of knowing laughter.
