We speak student!

00:04

Honesty

00:05

a la Shmoop

00:06

Lying. We can tell you we've never done it, [image of a sofa with paw prints all over it]

00:09

but, well, then we'd be... Well, you know.

00:11

It can be tempting to tell a little fib

00:13

now and again.

00:14

Whether you're trying to get out of unwanted social plans

00:17

or you forgot something you were responsible for, [teacher talking to a student]

00:20

or you want something done your way.

00:23

Lying will always be there to help you.

00:25

And if we can get all these cool benefits

00:27

from stretching the truth a little, well, heck,

00:29

why not lie all the time? [woman giving thumbs up to two men]

00:31

Well, here's the thing.

00:33

Lying can be risky business.

00:35

Take us for example.

00:36

We once made the bold claim that using Shmoop

00:38

would give you better grades and the power of flight.

00:41

And, well... [boy jumping from the roof top of a house]

00:45

[ police siren ]

00:46

Disclaimer done? Okay, great, moving on.

00:48

Many of us lie to cover our own hides.

00:50

Whether we really wanna win our tennis match

00:52

so we call a ball out that was definitely in,

00:55

or we desperately wanna be the valedictorian [woman playing tennis]

00:57

so we cheat on math tests and claim the grades as our own,

01:00

basically we lie to make ourselves look better.

01:03

But what happens when the web we weave gets a little too tangled?

01:06

What happens when our coach notices [image of a spider web wet with water]

01:08

we're calling shots incorrectly and suspends us from the team?

01:12

Or when our teacher sees our eyes

01:14

wandering and gives us an automatic F?

01:17

Not only do we lose any chance we have of succeeding,

01:19

we're branded as dishonest.

01:21

And being branded as something [two women talking to each other at the corridor]

01:23

rarely makes life easy.

01:24

Just ask our friend Hester.

01:26

So even if we might lose most of our matches

01:29

and we get straight Cs in math,

01:31

at least we're doing it honestly. [boy holding his Math Report Card with C grade]

01:33

And we heard somewhere that's the best policy.

01:36

That's not to say you should tell the truth in every situation

01:38

no matter what.

01:39

If a buddy of yours is diagnosed with cancer

01:41

and given a ten percent chance of survival,

01:43

you probably won't tell them that

01:44

odds are they're gonna die. [two friends visiting another friend at the hospital]

01:46

Instead, you tell them they're strong and they're gonna live.

01:48

Maybe it's not the truth,

01:50

but if it boosts your buddy's spirits,

01:52

there's a higher power here at work, right?

01:54

If you're at a club and an aggressive guy demands

01:56

your number, well, guess what? it's okay to give Meathead [man asking a woman for her number]

01:59

a fake number. If your safety is at stake,

02:01

it's okay to tell a lie.

02:03

And heck, when this cute little face

02:05

asks you if Santa Claus is real,

02:07

are you gonna be the Grinch?

02:10

Or are you gonna keep the magic alive just a little bit longer? Hmm? Hmm?

02:13

And let's not forget about being honest with numero uno. [man with a tray of cookies and milk]

02:16

Lying to yourself might help you deal with things you're afraid to face,

02:20

but it'll also keep everything bottled up inside.

02:23

If 8th grade science taught us anything,

02:25

it's that things that are bottled up [someone throwing a bottle of soda on the floor]

02:27

tend to go boom.

02:28

And since we don't wanna see you go boom

02:30

any time soon, be honest with yourself.

02:33

Maybe you're realizing your religious [man looking at himself in the mirror and crying]

02:35

or political views differ from those of your family.

02:39

Maybe you don't wanna find a prince after all.

02:42

No matter what you're keeping in,

02:43

it'll feel a whole lot better once you let it out. [ fart noise ]

02:46

Nice. Real mature.

02:48

We can't tell you when to be honest and when to lie, [girl announcing the award for honesty]

02:52

but as a general rule of thumb,

02:53

if you're gonna pull a Kanye,

02:55

probably keep it to yourself.

02:57

If you're pulling a Rose and making Jack

02:59

feel better about becoming a popsicle,

03:01

well, go ahead and lie. [woman on a wooden plank floating on water]

03:03

But seriously, there was room for both of them.

03:05

Look at the door. Clearly they could've fit.

03:07

[ clears throat ] Where were we?

03:08

All right, right. Honesty. It's a pretty good policy.

03:11

Check it out. It might make your life a happier one.

03:14

Sorry, we're not having another flying Shmoop-er fiasco on our hands. [boy at the hospital with a plaster in his hand]

03:20

[ groan ]
