How to Use Shmoop Courses

00:05

For Students

00:07

Well, if you've looked out your window recently, [A man looks out of his house window, there are metal structures , satellites etc all over]

00:09

you've probably noticed that the world's gone a bit digital.

00:12

You've probably also noticed that there are some

00:14

foreboding clouds overhead,

00:16

so you might wanna pull in your patio furniture. [A person carrying his laid back beach chair]

00:18

Okay, suppose you're thinking about taking a course

00:21

on the ol' Internet.

00:22

Well, you're in the right place.

00:23

Welcome to the wonderful world of Shmoop courses.

00:26

When you're just getting started, you'll need to sign into your Shmoop account, [Entering log in details of Shmoop account]

00:29

then click the "join classroom" button

00:32

on your dashboard. Right there.

00:34

As soon as you've entered the classroom code

00:35

or accepted the e-mail invitation from your teacher, [Entering details received through email to join a classroom]

00:38

you can start Shmooping.

00:40

And you're in.

00:41

Well, hey, that was easier than trying to get into

00:43

a Starbucks restroom without first purchasing [A girl asking the guy on counter at Starbucks for restroom]

00:45

a grande frappucino.

00:46

On the overview page, you'll see a link to the

00:49

course content area.

00:50

Once you enter the courses, [Specific page opens on choosing the choice of your course]

00:52

you'll be able to go to your "my tasks"

00:54

page, which will guide you through each unit.

00:57

See that syllabus tab on the left-hand side there?

00:59

For an online course, this is the only bus you'll ever need. [A yellow bus crosses the screen]

01:02

It gives you the breakdown of all unit and lesson titles

01:05

and lets you know which ones you conquered

01:07

and which ones have yet to be vanquished.

01:10

Then inside each lesson, you can access the introduction, [You can find categories in each selected lesson]

01:13

readings via this trio of tabs right there.

01:16

You can also check out the virtual gradebook, [Classrooms web page containing test assignments]

01:18

where you'll be able to see when your teacher

01:20

grades one of your assignments so you can get the good

01:23

or bad news right away.

01:26

You'll also be able to get a sense of your overall

01:28

progress within the course. [Gradebook showing subject wise progess]

01:30

If you're doing well, though, we suggest you do a print page -

01:33

that thing - before taping your progress report to the fridge.

01:37

You won't ever have to worry that we won't have

01:39

you covered no matter what the subject is. [Scrolling through all the subjects]

01:41

Shmoop offers full courses in a wide variety of content areas

01:44

including math, ELA,

01:46

life skills, writing, and oh so much more.

01:50

You probably wanna know what you're getting into.

01:52

Well, what do these courses consist of? [A student questioning standing in a classroom with bag on shoulders]

01:54

Good question.

01:55

Every one of our courses is relevant, engaging,

01:58

challenging, and totally comprehensive.

02:00

It's like in our union bylaws here.

02:02

In addition to a virtual textbook [Scrolling through virtual chapters of a subject]

02:03

consisting of in-depth readings and lessons,

02:06

you'll find activities and assignments,

02:08

informative and entertaining videos -

02:10

like this one [ chuckles ]. Or not. -

02:12

to help all you visual learners out there, [A student checking out a video lesson]

02:14

and unit and final exams

02:16

for full semester courses.

02:18

When you get to these bad boys,

02:20

make sure you have the time to focus

02:22

and sit down and crank out the entire thing. [Attempting time based multiple choice tests]

02:25

There are no do-overs on these thingies.

02:27

Look, Shmoop wants to be there for you.

02:29

We wanna be that mysterious fella behind a curtain who whispers,

02:32

"psst" whenever you're faltering

02:35

and is right there to hand you whatever you need. [Shmoop as an invigilator hovering over a student head who is attempting an exam paper]

02:37

If something isn't quite working for you,

02:39

our ears are always open. Honestly.

02:41

We never close them.

02:43

So you know like that elephant thing.

02:45

So take Shmoop courses for a spin

02:47

and we promise you won't be disappointed.

02:49

Once you've taken the plunge, [Shmoop logo jumps into the sea from a ship]

02:51

you'll feel like a self-assured captain

02:53

on board the ship of knowledge.

02:55

Sorry about the marine metaphor.

02:56

We must be itching to take a cruise. [A cruise ship getting ready to take off with people boarding]

02:58

Hey, anyone have that number for Royal Carribean?

03:01

Let's do that. It looks kind of fun.

03:04

[ cheering ]
