Typical Day
Alice Boomer wakes with a smile from a dream that looks something like this:
The dream just happens to look similar to the studio Alice is in the process of building. She's an experienced studio engineer and producer with a collection of 'A List' musical acts on her résumé. She's ready to bet on her own skills and contacts by going independent. Incidentally, she has been very busy lately.
Alice rolls over and flops onto the empty half of the bed, remembering her boyfriend, astronaut Glenn Rodgers. He is handling some business in space at the moment. Alice misses him, but enjoys telling people that her boyfriend is in space at the moment.
She takes a cold shower, then grabs some cereal and takes in the view from the bay window in her high-rise apartment. Summer in Chicago. Alice has always been a city girl, and summer in the city is her favorite. Music everywhere.
At this point, Alice can't help but focus in on the morning sounds of the city. The swelling hum of traffic, the swooshing breeze, and the colorful punctuating voices and horns.
Alice calls up her longtime assistant, Clint Whisper, who she is taking with her in her ongoing move to independence from her prior employer, Big Moany Studios, à la Jerry Maguire. The voice on the other end of the line is rather rattled and sleepy.
"Guh?" it says.
"Get up, Clint. Tell me what you have to do today," replies Alice.
"I have to serve you, my liege," says Clint, with a yawn.
Before Alice can chime in, Clint continues, "I know, I know—haggle with the equipment people and get you my final thoughts on the pool of applicants for recording engineers and mastering guys."
"Good," replies Alice, "Now fly like the wind, my pretty! Fly!"
"Hey, you know I hate it when you treat me like a flying monkey, Alice. Alice?"
But she already hung up.
Alice doesn't have any studio gigs going on presently—she is too busy getting her new shop set up. Her usual clients are all on tour this time of year (festival season and whatnot). Alice knows that until the studio is finished being built to her specifications, the most important thing to do is hunt down clients.
She has had her eye on Lil P, a local rapper who is underground famous but remains unsigned. Alice loves his music, and is amazed that he has gone under the radar so long. She is also confident that she can approach him offering a more upscale set of resources than he had had on previous recordings. She writes a note to herself to track Lil P down this week.
Alice savors the lull of activity in this transitional period, though there is still much to be done. The construction crew is still building, the business papers are in the mail, and Clint is on top of the rest of it. Good old loyal Clint. In any case, Alice decides to treat the rest of the day as a mini-vacation.
After a mini-spa day and a soak in the jacuzzi, Alice meets with her old friend from school, Sonic Jefferson. The old friends enjoy catching up over Italian, and Sonic hands Alice a set of free VIP passes to Smackdownmania, an event he is running sound for this month.
Through a mouthful of butternut squash ravioli, Alice thanks him profusely—she has a weak spot for wrestling. The event takes place just in time for Glenn to get back from space. Nice. Smackdownmania is a wholesome activity that Alice and Glenn have always treasured as a couple.
Fun for the whole family. (Source)
When Alice gets home, she is too sleepy from the sauna and meal to put in any time on the super-secret sound software project she has had in the works for years. "Just you wait," Alice mumbles, drifting off to sleep. "This thing is going to change the face of sound forever. Gosh, I love audio. Yes, Mrs. President, I'd be happy to DJ your quinceañera."
Alice has a bit of a problem with sleep-talking to an imagined female president, but who cares? She's a straight up boss all the same.
