20-Year Prospect
Don't be shocked (yeah, that pun was intentional) when we tell you this career field is expected to grow by twenty percent between now and 2022.
Now that the Great Recession is over, developers are building McMansions for the masses again. In July 2014, more than a million houses were under construction, up from around 900,000 privately-owned housing starts the year before. This is great news for electricians; it's not like those houses wire themselves, after all.
Electricians will also get a jolt (huzzah for bad puns) when they learn that they can work on solar power projects. There were 93,000 people working in the American solar industry in August 2010; of these employees, the majority – including electricians – worked in solar installation.
So, yeah, electricians will definitely be around for years to come, plugged in as they are to the economy…and that makes pun number three.
