Fortunately, the work for a beginning editor can be a full-time job with benefits. You'll be hired by post-production houses and in an entrepreneurial sector; new businesses are popping up all the time. In the long run, however, the self-employed editor is competing for fewer than 750 job openings a year in the U.S. and only 300 in California.

But…these odds are for the movie and television industries. While job growth is headed south in L.A., it's because there are new players in the entertainment field: original productions by Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. You can edit zillions of other projects, and there's plenty of latitude to the job description when you collaborate and absorb new skills.
