20-Year Prospect
Job outlook for CNMs and CMs is a little better than average. Unless we get wiped out by a meteor or alien invasion, people aren't going to stop having babies any time soon—after all, multiplying and creating offspring's pretty much the whole point of life from a biological standpoint. If nothing else, people want to make sure they have little clones who can take out the trash when they're too busy reading the paper (dad).
The way we do birthing and maternity have changed as well. New parents are increasingly in search of personal (and occasionally alternative) birthing options from the standard assistant-less situations. Since the late '80s, midwife-attended births have risen every year, to almost ten percent of all births nationwide (source). That growth is expected to continue well into the next few decades.
In a nutshell? Credentialed midwives are in vogue at the moment, and only getting hotter in the coming years. Get those baby-catching skills in shape now.
