20-Year Prospect
Long story short, prospects should be good. But that doesn't quite explain the current shortage of good nephrology jobs. Despite an expected fourteen percent growth of the field over the next ten years, nephrologists are still having trouble finding work (source).
So what gives? It's hard to say―it's possible that the average kidney doc is waiting later to retire at the moment, creating a bit of a lag in new jobs. Never fear, the most qualified young folks nearly always find something to do, even if they're forced to take a teaching position. Is that so shameful?
Don't worry too much, you'll be a doctor. There's gotta be some doctoring around that you can do until a nephrology position opens up.
