In places like England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, rugby is kind of a big deal, so you could be quite famous there.
However, if you're a USA Rugby player scoring tries in front of the (tiny) hometown crowd, you're still basically unknown. Your fan club will consist of your confused parents, your mostly-supportive siblings, maybe a few British and Australian transplants you met at the club, and that one guy you know from college who swears that rugby's this close to becoming mainstream.
Otherwise, if you tell most folks in America that you're a rugby player, they'll probably just look at you suspiciously before walking in the opposite direction. They don't have a clue what it is, but it sounds scary nonetheless.
