Odds of Getting In
Urban planning can be a competitive arena, especially when the economy dips and consulting firms pounce on scarce projects like lions on a wildebeest that zigged when his herd zagged. However, the profession is expecting 10% growth between 2012 and 2022. This means about 4000 new jobs coming up (source).
That's the good news. The bad news is that the field is becoming more sophisticated, and a Bachelor's degree might not be enough to get your foot in the door. Plan on getting a Master's from the best school you can get accepted to. We hear Harvard and MIT are pretty good.
And flexibility could speed your progress. Be willing to consider starting as an unpaid intern, or relocating temporarily to a less "competitive" area (We hear Anchorage has beautiful summers).
