20-Year Prospect
The grocery industry in general is more cutthroat than the butchers working in the meat department. The organic grocery industry is no exception; promoting an environmentally friendly lifestyle doesn't mean you are friendly.
From the time the first store opened in 1980, Whole Foods has been an icon of environmentally and ethically conscious consumerism (source). But now they have competition. Trader Joe's, Kroger, Costco, and now even Walmart all offer organic food, too. It's also often at far lower prices than the OG Whole Foods (source).
And the competition just keeps coming. European superstores Aldi and Lidl have both announced plans to expand in the U.S. (source).
Twenty years from now, green grocers are sure to be around, but stores like Whole foods will likely see some changes. Whole Foods recently announced plans to open a new chain of budget-conscious stores geared towards millennials who prefer eating cheap and eating out (source).
Whether it works or not, things will likely get a little lower budget overall which could mean lower pay for the workers. Jobs will be around, just keep the above in mind.
