Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required material; explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about the topic to explore ideas under discussion.
Preparation is key. Make sure your students know exactly what they must do in order to be prepared for class discussions. Explicit instructions will be necessary. For example: Read Chapter 31 and jot down two details about Pocahontas' life and adventures that you'd like to know more about.
