Common Core Standards
Grade 6
Writing W.6.7
Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate.
This standard is pretty self-explanatory. Just make sure that students' research topics aren't so broad that they become meaningless. For example, a question like "What happens when you set things on fire?" might be too broad (answer: it gets set on fire), while a much less general question such as "What happens when you set common household objects on fire?" might be a little more appropriate. The answer to that question is also pretty obvious (your parents will freak out and ground you for, like, the end of eternity), but hey, at least the student will get bonus points for having an adequately focused research question.
