- As the group walks on together, Avenger and Gemma fall in love. Josef marries them.
- The partisans plan a raid on Chelmno. They are attacked by Nazis before they get there, and Avenger is shot and killed.
- Gemma and Josef escape. Eventually they hook up with another band of partisans.
- Gemma learns that she's pregnant. Josef helps her forge papers and gives her a family ring and his photo in the hopes his family connections will gain her entrance into America.
- He never heard from Gemma again.
