- The storm rages for three hours before it passes. Shin spends most of that time telling Jason the "truth" about water towers, while they cling to the bottom of the ladder. Shin has it all worked out—how the ocean is a conscious entity, and water towers are the ocean's Avatars.
- "'I thought people built the towers,'" Jason says (29.9).
- "'That's what they want you to think. […] But it's true. I've been talking to them. It's quite a burden, you know, being chosen'" (29.10-12), Shin explains. He credits Jason with having opened his eyes and ears.
- When the storm subsides Jason can't get Shin to leave the tank—he feels safe in there. So Jason climbs down and calls the cops who drag Shin out.
