- Ben goes down to the dock and finds a boat that needs workers. He gets himself a job. They're shipping out the next morning.
- He goes into Dylan's room to say goodbye. Dylan tries to convince him not to go, but Ben's made up his mind.
- Ben finds the motel where his dad is staying. Gerry's asleep and Dad's out somewhere. Ben leaves him a goodbye note.
- Here's Dad. He wants to talk. He tells Ben he really didn't try to kill himself.
- Dad also says that it's not fair of Ben to blame him for his wife's death.
- Dad says Ben can't leave his brothers. Ben says, essentially, "Oh yes I can."
- One last thing. Dad brought Ben one of his mother's sachets. Why? Because he couldn't bring Ben's mother.
- Ben walks to the beach and thinks about his mother.
