The Walking Dead

(2) Sea Level

This is a comic book. It's mostly pictures.

So yeah…it's not a difficult read at all.

Here's a sampling of one page of dialogue: "C'mon! It's not safe here!" "No. No. No." "Ahh!" BLAM! "C'mon! There's no telling how many there are!" "EEEK!" "Gruh." "S***! S***!" BLAM! "AAH!" (609-614).

Tolstoy this isn't. But that doesn't mean there isn't close reading to be done; it's just close reading of a different kind. The panels are layered with detail, from the stuff overflowing in Glenn's glove compartment to the destruction of Atlanta to gore-splattered undead to a pop-culture reference hidden on a billboard (did you spot the donut?). Just because the text is simple, doesn't mean there aren't lots of details to find between the lines.
