Best Practices
MoreCalifornia
Hey, Californians. We hate playing favorites, but...you're our favorite.
Shmoop HQ is in California, and we basically bleed gold. That's why we've gone out of our way to give you tailor-made resources, including multiple a-g certified courses and Smarter Balanced California, among loads of other golden goodies.
A-G Certified Courses
We aim to make learning fun and accessible—and certified, to boot. Shmoop has been granted a-g certification for over 35 of our Common Core-aligned courses.
That means these courses will now be honored as part of the requirements for admission into the University of California system.
Shmoop aims to please students and teachers alike, and the a-g certification is an official reminder that learning doesn't have to be blah; our courses can engage students while still meeting the rigorous college readiness standards expected by California's higher education system. Our full course catalog includes Common Core-aligned courses in all subjects, including a full suite of Core ELA and Math courses for grades 6-12, along with special interest courses like Pop Culture Literacy and an entire course devoted to Bruce Springsteen.
Common Core and Smarter Balanced California
Love it or hate it, California is on board with the Common Core. If you need help navigating SBAC assessment targets or figuring out those newfangled technology-enhanced items, Shmoop's Smarter Balanced California prep has you covered.
- Every assessment, performance task, and individual item in Shmoop's guide is aligned to the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Grade 11 assessment targets. In fact, they're also all aligned to Common Core standards and Depth of Knowledge levels for good measure.
- Shmoop's guide includes one full-length assessment, one diagnostic assessment, and oodles of targeted practice problems. For those of you in the mood for some classroom bonding, we offer classroom activities and performance tasks for both English Language Arts-Literacy and Mathematics, too.
- Shmoop is really into technology when we're not worrying about Skynet, so we've packed our guide to the California Smarter Balanced assessments with spanking new technology-enhanced items. In addition to multiple types of multiple-choice questions, our assessments feature drag and drop, hot spot, short text, graphic response, and equation response items.
We also have Smarter Balanced prep for Grade 8, if you're doing this thang middle school style.
CAHSEE and CAHSEE Teacher Guide
We appreciate your dedication to helping students pass the California High School Exit Exam, even though we don't want to get in the middle of yet another heated debate about whether it's pronounced "CAY-see" or "CAH-see." Whether you're teaching the ELA section, the Math section, or the whole shebang, Shmoop's CAHSEE Teacher Guide will help you prepare students to pass the test and earn their diplomas. It comes packed with loads of goodies:
- Scripted CAHSEE lessons that won't make you or your students snooze
- A course planner that organizes the lessons into a 4-, 10-, or 18-week course that covers all of CAHSEE, as well as 4-week courses that focus on ELA or Math
- Explanations that cover every topic on the CAHSEE
- Ready-to-print student handouts keyed to the material you cover in each lesson, which include sample problems, classroom activities, and more
- Scaffolding, standards, and activities to help you use the Teacher Guide in combination with the student guide
- A chance to pit your students against each other in an epic Shmoints showdown
And, of course, we have the actual CAHSEE Test Prep for your students.
Resources for English Language Learners
Speaking of CAHSEE, we offer it in Spanish, too. Take a look at Shmoop's other offerings targeting English Language Learners.

- We've got TOEFL® Test Prep for students hoping to study at an American university.
