00:03

Here’s an unshmoopy question you’ll find on the exam somewhere you take in life...

00:07

at some point… Good luck.

00:10

What is the solution set for the equation…

00:12

the absolute value of x minus 2 equals the absolute value of x plus 3?

00:17

And here are the potential answers...

00:23

So… what is this question asking?

00:24

Well, since this is an absolute value calculation, let’s start by just putting the absolute

00:29

value thingies into 4 buckets:

00:33

(x - 2) = (x + 3)

00:35

-(x - 2) = (x + 3)

00:38

(x - 2) = -(x + 3),

00:42

and -(x - 2) = -(x + 3).

00:54

The first and last… as well as the 2nd and 3rd… equations are identical once simplified…

00:59

…so there are actually two versions that require solving:

01:02

x - 2 = x + 3… and -x + 2 = x + 3.

01:08

In the first equation, the x's cancel, which results in no solution…

01:12

…while the second becomes -2x = 1, or x equals negative one-half.

01:18

So answer A is our guy. As in, “Absolutely fabulous.”
