Multiplication and Division of 1 Digit Numbers, a la Shmoop

00:08

While vacationing, the Mulligan family pops into Top That,

00:11

an ice cream shop, for an afternoon snack.

00:14

As the kids line up against the counter to pick their type of ice cream…

00:17

…Mom and Dad realize that this shop only sells cones

00:20

with two or more scoops of different flavored ice cream.

00:23

Good thing we don’t have an obesity problem in this country.

00:26

As dad pulls out his rather thin wallet,

00:29

he’s not so sure he can cover this rather large afternoon snack.

00:33

With this many kids, how many scoops are we talking about?

00:36

If there are eight kids… and of course Dad wants one too…

00:39

and everyone will have two scoops a piece,

00:42

how many scoops of ice cream will he have to pay for?

00:45

As Dad starts counting on his fingers and toes…

00:48

…Mom explains that he can simply multiply the number of cones,

00:52

nine, by the number of scoops each will get, two.

00:57

We can calculate nine times two by either adding nine two times…

01:01

nine plus nine, which equals eighteen…

01:05

… OR we can add two nine times,

01:09

two plus two plus two plus two plus two plus two plus

01:14

two plus two plus two… which also equals eighteen.

01:19

Altogether, Dad owes for eighteen scoops of ice cream.

01:25

Uh oh, looks like Mom wanted some, too.

01:28

Looks like Dad’s going to sleep in the dog house tonight.

01:31

But wait… Mom and Dad can share that cone, right?

01:34

Since there are two scoops of ice cream and two people who want it,

01:39

let’s take two divided by two.

01:41

How many scoops will each get?

01:43

Well since the divisor, two people, goes into the dividend, two scoops, only one time…

01:49

…Mom and Dad will each get one scoop.

01:52

Of course, since Dad fouled up, Mom gets the cone…
