A school's reputation and ability to stay afloat financially depend on high enrollment and a successful, diverse student body. If you can't convince the smart kids to care or to come, not only is your job in jeopardy—the whole school can feel the affects.
There's also the stress of believing in a particular candidate and having to convince the committee to overlook less than stellar grades or low test scores. If you succeed, this kid gets a chance at a great education; if you fail, he or she may end up living in his or her parents' basement and going to junior college.
