Physical Danger
While a purple heart might look good on your résumé, bravery definitely isn't a prerequisite for optician jobs. In fact, we recommend that you don't try to be a hero at work. There's no reason to wear a cape. It'll only get caught in things, which will certainly add to the danger. Just leave the cape at home.
Though it's true that opticians may occasionally work with some potentially harmful chemicals and tools (at least the lab folks, who are a minority compared to the dispensing opticians), realistically, accidents are very rare.
Probably the scariest thing about this job is that many (if not most) opticians aren't provided benefits like health insurance or a retirement plan by their employer. For many members of the workforce, especially those with families to take care of, that's a real deal breaker.
It makes those occasions when you have to deal with potentially hazardous materials a little more hazardous than you might like. Keep in mind, though, that beyond a frustrating bug in QuickBooks or a fickle customer, you won't be in too many frustrating or delicate situations.
