Qualifications
If you're looking to don the title of food service manager for your very own restaurant, then you don't really need qualifications, at least not on paper. You're the one doing the hiring, and so it's up to you to make sure that you'd want to hire yourself. Do you have what it takes to make this work? You'll want to know the answer to that, and so will any banks you hit up for a business loan.
If you were thinking, "I'll just pop into the bank after school and tell them about how my mom says I'm an awesome cook," then think again. Whether you're opening your own place or growing into a franchise, the money people want to see an impeccable credit history, a foolproof business plan, and some sort of informal résumé before even considering it. "I made my mom's Bridge club Bagel Bites one time" is not going to cut it.
Now, if you want to be smart about it (and of course you do, you're a Shmooper after all), then you'll want to be as prepared as possible to handle the duties of the job. Just because you can give yourself the job, doesn't mean you should. A bachelor's degree in hospitality or food service management is a great place to start. If you can pay your tuition by taking a job at a restaurant similar to the one you want to open, even better.
Whatever route you take, just make sure you've acquired a double-toppings load of business and restaurant savvy before signing those loan documents. Trust us on that one.
