Dark Water Chapter 17 Summary

  • Pearl knows Robby is up to something—he's not usually this insistent about grabbing a bite to eat.
  • So when she sees that Mary Beth is their waitress, she can't say she's surprised.
  • She asks Mary Beth if they have any crab. Hmm… maybe because that's Amiel's favorite.
  • When they don't have crab, Pearl orders a sandwich instead. Robby is all smiles and flirting with Mary Beth, and Pearl knows he's up to something.
  • After their waitress heads back to the kitchen, Robby asks Pearl to get the scoop on Mary Beth; he wants to know what she's like and what her story is. Luckily Pearl knows the owner of the diner so she can find out for him.
  • Pearl is reluctant to help, but she goes along with the plan because she feels badly for Robby, plus he makes a good point that she knows what it's like to have a cheating dad.
  • She goes and asks the owner about Mary Beth, pretending that Robby has the hots for her.
  • Pearl learns that Mary Beth had a tennis scholarship to UCLA, but pulled a muscle and couldn't play anymore. Now she's studying gerontology, a.k.a. old people.
  • Mary Beth comes back and the owner introduces Pearl and Robby. She's a little surprised at his name of course (since she's hooking up with his dad and all), but she tries to shrug it off. Robby shamelessly flirts with her.
  • As they are leaving, Pearl asks Robby what his end game is.
  • He replies that he doesn't really have a plan; he's just seeing where this goes. Um, okay… Sure you are, Robby.
