Dark Water Chapter 34 Summary

  • Most days Pearl reads or goes swimming, deliberately avoiding Amiel so she doesn't embarrass herself again.
  • When she finds a note from him leading her to Black Oak, Pearl is surprised to find acorns there for her.
  • Amiel begins leaving notes for her with directions to a place in the woods where he's hidden a gift. Sometimes it's a seashell or rock, but no matter what, she cherishes whatever he gives her, taking each gift and placing it on the windowsill in the tree house.
  • Pearl's mom points out to her that it's dangerous to ride her bike along the main road down to the river.
  • Even though Pearl doesn't get why this is (the workers do it all the time), she doesn't want to argue with her mom.
  • Her mom suggests that she get a job so she has something to do over the summer.
  • Pearl applies to Subway and a coffee shop in town. When she interviews at the coffee shop, the lady asks her if she's related to Sharon DeWitt. Uh, that's her mom.
  • That's funny, because Sharon works there. Huh?
  • Pearl is confused because her mom told her that she worked at a bookstore. Why would she lie about something like that?
  • When she asks her mom about it, she just makes up excuses.
  • Pearl knows her mom is embarrassed about taking a job at a coffee shop, but she doesn't think she should lie about it.
