Odds of Hanging On
Is this really a job you want to hang on to? Sure, taking care of little Timmy was fun for the first couple years. You see him take his first steps. You build sandcastles at the beach. You take him to the dentist.
But just imagine if you stayed on for a really long time. You'd get older…Timmy would get older…gravity and wrinkles would take their toll, and suddenly, little Timmy wouldn't be so cute anymore. And taking thirty-year-old Timmy to the dentist becomes an elaborate exercise in trying to fit Timmy into the children's dentist chair. Even building sandcastles isn't as much fun when Timmy only has time to meet you at the beach during his lunch break.
What's our point? Our point is that "hanging on" to a nanny or au pair job doesn't really make sense. It's actually a little creepy. Just like a teacher gets a new class every year, you'll need to find a new family every couple of years. But there's always a new family and a new kid who needs caring for. If you're willing to bounce around a bit, you'll have steady employment.
