20-Year Prospect

20-Year Prospect

Quick show of hands: who thinks that workplace inequality will be totally eliminated in twenty years? Yeah, we don't think so either. As long as discriminatory workplace policies need policing, EEOC officers will be there to do it.

The essence of this job—to fight discrimination—isn't going to change. However, the nitpicky details might. Since laws change, things that are considered illegal will change, too. Maybe something that's currently just considered rude will be reclassified as discriminatory; or maybe practices that were once considered discriminatory might be re-categorized as non-discriminatory.

You'll have to read the fine print throughout your career and adapt to whatever little changes are made, whenever they're made.

Because this job market is growing so slowly—it's at a measly three to seven percent, while most jobs are growing by around eleven percent (source)—getting and holding onto a position might prove challenging. You'll need as much education and work experience as you can get to land one of these coveted positions, and you'll need to stay at the top of your game so nobody will regret hiring you.

Work hard, play fair, keep a close eye on the current legislation, and you'll find yourself sitting pretty for years to come.
