Stress

The truth is that, yes, repairing and maintaining highways can be very stressful. Maintenance workers have to do everything just right―they prevent accidents and fix potentially lethal hazards in roadways. They get plenty of training to make sure they're up to the task, but that doesn't make the consequences of failure any less daunting.

Aside from the fixes themselves, most of your stressors will come from attempting to work on a road while cars, bikes, and pedestrians are still using it. It's hard enough to maneuver maintenance vehicles on their own, but add a tired parent who's speeding down the highway because they're late for work―yikes.

Also, when emergencies happen on the road due to weather, you'll be some of the first people responding. Who do you think plows the snow during big snow storms? Being responsible for maintaining the highway during emergencies is a pretty stressful aspect to the job that you'll definitely have to be prepared for. We recommend lots of coffee, good sleep, and a hobby that involves a lot of laughter.
