20-Year Prospect
At least for now, there's no foreseeable future in which human beings (or the trinkets they make) don't need to move across the ocean. There are planes, sure, but when you look at the fuel cost, safety, and logistics of using them in bulk, moving things by sea is still often the best way to get from Continent A to Continent B.
Even outside the shipping industry, there's a thriving market for fishing rigs, personal boats, life rafts, canoes, sailboats, yachts, and the rest. Ships aren't going anywhere—the government predicts a growth rate of 10% over the next decade—and that means that shipwrights aren't going anywhere, either. Except to work.
