Flora and Ulysses Chapter 17 Summary

I Smell Squirrel

  • The boy at the door has very blonde hair and huge, dark glasses on. He introduces himself as William Spiver, Tootie's great-nephew.
  • Right away, William reports that he's suffering from temporary blindness from a trauma, which makes Flora think back to if she's ever read anything about that.
  • All the while, Tootie insists that he's not actually blind; he's just wearing those glasses.
  • Flora's mom doesn't care if the kid is blind or not—either way he can be a friend to Flora, and boy does she need some.
  • Even though Flora's not too sure about the whole thing, she goes along with it, right up until William claims he can smell squirrel.
  • She knew she didn't need a friend. Flora's annoyed but there's no time to react, because everyone turns around and sees Ulysses sitting on top of the lamp. Uh-oh.
