Out of the Dust Chapter 3 Summary

Losing Livie

  • One of Billie Jo's best friends, Livie Killian, is moving away to California with her family to escape the dust. Remember: It's the 1930s, a.k.a. way before Facebook and texting, so the chances of these two seeing each other again—or even talking again—aren't good.
  • Their class throws Livie a party, where she shares memories of her friends and gives them gifts, including a picture of Billie Jo eating an apple and playing piano. When the party is over, she helps clean up while her friends go home to study.
  • Billie Jo feels guilty because she wishes she were leaving Oklahoma instead of her friend.
