Family School
- The class decides to help their guests by bringing ingredients to make them soup every day; they eat lunch together and leave enough so the family has food for supper.
- They also bring toys for the children and things for the coming baby. Billie Jo gives away one of the nighties Ma made for Franklin from a feed sack.
- Buddy Williams, the dad, helps out around the school fixing things and cleaning up the schoolyard.
- The grandmother takes the children outside when it isn't dusty, but most of the time, they attend lessons along with Miss Freeland and her class.
